Moonlight filtered through the pines, washing the world in cold silver. The sorceress moved with practiced calm, red hair loose against her dark cloak, boots soundless against the snow. In her palm, a small flame burned steady, its warmth the only defiance against the night. Magic stirred uneasily. The forest felt wrong to still, as though it were holding itself apart from her. No animals watched. No wind answered her passing. Even her breath seemed louder than it should have been. Then the trees thinned. Ahead lay a clearing, smooth and untouched, glowing beneath the full moon. At its center knelt a small shape, half-hidden in shadow. It resembled a child, slight shoulders, bowed head, but the resemblance stopped there. The air around it warped faintly, bending light and silence alike. The crying softened. She stepped closer. At the edge of the clearing, her flame shuddered. It did not go out at once. Instead, it drew inward, shrinking as if recoiling from something unseen. The warmth drained from her fingers. The light thinned, guttered and vanished. Cold rushed in. Left in moonlight alone, she stood at the boundary, magic hushed, heart steady despite the warning pounding beneath her ribs. The crying stopped. Slowly, the child began to lift its head.
