March 2025. I went stream fishing in the Umizawa River, which originates from Mt. Odake (1,266.5m), a mountain in Okutama, Tokyo, which is one of Japan's 200 famous mountains and one of Japan's 100 famous flowers. This river is managed by the Okutama Fisheries Association, and fishing licenses can be purchased at the 7-Eleven in Furusato. It's great that you can buy fishing licenses at a convenience store that is open 24 hours a day. Downstream, there is a power plant called Hikawa Power Plant, which takes in water through a water conduit from below the Ogouchi Dam. There are four power plants on the Okutama River. Electricity is generated at the Tama River No. 1 Power Plant below the Ogouchi Dam (Lake Okutama), and the water is sent to the Hikawa Power Plant through a water conduit, with an intake directly below the dam. The water then flows into the Shiromaru Dam, where electricity is generated at the Shiromaru Power Plant directly below the dam. It is also generated through a water conduit at the Tama River No. 3 Power Plant, a little above Mitake Station. To go to the fishing spot this time, I rented a Shimano electric mountain bike E-BIKE from HELLO CYCLE at JR Hatonosu Station. It's an unmanned shared bicycle, so you can rent it even early in the morning. It can handle mountain paths and rough terrain, so I think it's a good bike for stream fishing. Currently, in Okutama, it's only available at Furusato Station and Hatonosu Station, but I hope they'll be available at the terminal station, Okutama Station. Downstream from the Hikawa Power Plant are the Okutama Fishing Pond Cafe Futami, the Tokyo Metropolitan Okutama Fish Farming Center, and the Makino Fish Farm, and you can also enjoy seeing what kind of fish live in the Unasawa River, which is its source.
