The ions can separate when the ionic compound is dissolved in water or when the ionic compound is taken in the molten state. The ionization on the other hand can refer to the heterolytic cleavage of a polar covalent compound leading to formation of ions. Ionization term is also used when ions are formed from neutral atoms by loss of electrons.
