Step aside DMT; EVERYONE needs LSD...Breathing)! Have heard of DMT breath work? It is an intense style purported to trigger a release of DMT (a psychedelic compound your body produces) because of the unique experiences that some practitioners experience. Sounds sexy, right? You may be saying: “WOW! I must do that!” What about LSD breathing? LSD breathing refers to a style popularized by Patrick McKeown (@oxygenadvantage , @buteykoclinic) and rooted in an approach to breathing created by Dr. Konstantin Buteyko. Upon a diagnosis of severe hypertension as a young man, Dr. Buteyko was given 12 months to live. In his studies, Buyteko noticed that terminally ill patients had heavy, fast, and shallow breathing. He realized HE breathed the same way. He wondered: “What if I breathe the opposite way: Lighter, Slower and Deeper?” He did so and his chronic headache went away! He made it a habit and his terminal condition disappeared. Patrick McKeown (read his books, follow his YouTube channel) popularized this technique with a memorable acronym: LSD. McKeown used this technique (among others) to help over 7,000 people suffering with asthma, anxiety, poor athletic performance, and more. LSD BREATHING: Light - Breathing heavily offloads too much CO2 (it doesn’t boost your O2) which is vital if you want proper delivery of O2 to the the brain, etc. Slow - Allows for air to journey lower in the lungs and allow for more time for gas exchange (O2 and CO2). Deep - Requires use of the diaphragm muscle. Calms the nervous system, draws air to the lower lobes of the lungs, with the most alveoli allowing for better gas exchange. In contrast, shallow/chest and fast breathing mostly shuttles air through your trachea - some will get to the lungs, but not all. The last piece of this is to breathe through the nose (more on that in other posts). But I”m stressed! I’m anxious! I’m depressed! I need a mental state Change!!!!!! Shouldn’t I do DMT Breath Work!? (You need to decide for yourself) Know this: LSD Breathing gently balances the nervous system, permits better transport of Oxygen to the brain, leading to a more calm and grounded version of you. Plus: YOU CAN DO LSD BREATHING ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. LSD Breathing doesn’t have the contraindications that more intense breathing styles have (like DMT breathwork, Holotropic, Wim Hof, or the Healing Breath Work Journey’s that I facilitate). IN FACT: research suggests that LSD breathing is beneficial for contraindicated conditions: high blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy, etc. (this is not a full list) AND, it will boost your CO2 tolerance!! The power to shift your mental (and physical) state is easier and far cheaper than you think: Practice light, slow, & deep nasal breathing as much as possible. 💥Want to break through stress and feeling stuck? 💥Among other things, I’m a certified Oxygen Advantage instructor and incorporate LSD Breathing into my 1-on-1 coaching program that upgrades your body and mind so you can optimize your one and precious life. 💥Send me a DM if you want to learn more about my program.
