Francis O’Neill (1848-1936) was a flute-player and music collector whose day job was police chief of the Chicago Police Department. His collections and writings on Irish music and musicians are still printed and used today. Nicholas Carolan, founder of the Irish Traditional Music Archive, authored a book about O’Neill’s life and music: A Harvest Saved. Willie Clancy’s rendition of this hornpipe can be heard on The Pipering of Willie Clancy Vol. 2, track 23. I learned this hornpipe as a teenager playing in sessions at J. Patrick’s Pub in downtown Baltimore. I include a transcription and arrangement of "Chief O'Neill's Favorite" in my new book: 20 Essential Uilleann Piping Tunes, Vol. 1. The sheet music (including suggested ornamentation and variations) is available now on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/20-Essential-U...
