The Habsburgs, as they later came to be known, resided here until the 13th century. Their center of power then moved to Vienna after Rudolf I conquered the city from his adversary Premysl Ottokar and killed him two years later in the Battle of Dürnkrut. In this new production by Erbe Österreich, designer Alexander Frohner recounts the early history of the Habsburgs and their connections with present-day Switzerland. The ties were never completely severed – the Muri Abbey in Aargau is like a baroque island that recalls the grandeur of the great monasteries and imperial abbeys of the Habsburg Empire. After the end of the monarchy, the children of Emperor Charles remembered their home in Aargau and donated a new family vault to Muri Abbey.
