What if the experience everyone calls “losing your mind” is sometimes something very different? Across cultures and throughout history, people who reported visions, voices, or profound shifts in consciousness were not always seen as mentally ill. In many traditions, these experiences were understood as part of a spiritual awakening or initiation process. Today, however, Western psychology often interprets these same experiences through a purely medical lens. In this video, I explore the thin line between psychosis and spiritual awakening — and why some people who feel like they’re “going crazy” might actually be going through a powerful transformation. Researchers have noted that certain psychotic-like episodes can sometimes function as problem-solving or visionary experiences that lead to personal growth and new meaning in life. Other studies describe “spiritual emergence” — intense states of consciousness that resemble psychiatric symptoms but may ultimately result in psychological transformation and expanded awareness. This doesn’t mean every difficult mental state is spiritual. But it does raise an important question: What happens when a culture no longer has language or support for transformative experiences? In this episode we explore 3 signs of waking up. Sometimes the breakdown is the beginning of waking up.
