There could be many different reasons why we had to correct vocal pitch in the 80s. Many world famous vocalists (and divas) had a fabulous vocal sound in the studio, but air conditioning, a slight cold or running out of steam could be reasons for the producer not to press on with new takes. Maybe 3-4 lines were done with just the right emotions pouring out of their voices. It would then be much better to fix the off-pitch notes here and there than to press on with another take. This was very much done in high-end productions. Much more than some (today) would think. So how was this done then? With samplers. You sampled a line, or phrase and used the pitch bend wheel to manipulate the tone where needed. This was then flown back onto the tape. SMPTE.
