The Beowulf poem (usually just called Beowulf) is a study in contradictions: It’s written in Old English, but no English characters appear in the poem. It is set in Denmark, but its main hero is a Geat. It’s written by a Christian monk, but the poem contains no New Testament references -- and in fact, many scholars have gone so far as to claim that the poem is not the product of a Christian imagination at all, but rather, a badly Christianized crypto-pagan story. As we will suggest in this episode, this is mainly because medievalists don’t understand medieval Christianity -- certainly not the kind of Christianity in which the Beowulf poet seems to have been steeped. In the course of this episode, we’ll give a brief introduction to the Beowulf poem for those who have yet to read it. Then, we’ll show some of the evidence for the surprising role of Enochian literature in Anglo-Saxon Christianity. Finally, we’ll demonstrate how the “Enochian connection” is the missing connective tissue between the various themes of the poem, and in particular its three monster fights. Beowulf is the story of how one man finally settled the feud between God and the Monsters. --- THE GREAT TALES airs live on YouTube and Ancient Faith Talk on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month at 2pm ET / 11am PT.
