A Complete Guide to Elbow OCD In Gymnasts - What It Is and Treatment

Today on the Shift Show I deep dive Elbow OCD (Osteochondritis Dissecans a condition that affects gymnasts and baseball players. It is a cartilage injury that occurs in the elbow joint and can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of great research on how to treat this condition, leaving many athletes feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. In this episode, I discuss what elbow OCD is, why it happens, and the treatment options available to those who suffer from it. The exact cause of elbow OCD is not known, but it is believed to be related to repetitive stress on the joint. In gymnasts, this stress can come from doing too many repetitive motions such as handstands, cartwheels, and vaults. Elbow OCD is a condition that can be very challenging for gymnasts and other athletes. However, with the right treatment, it is possible to overcome this injury and return to sports. I Discuss: 02:44 What is a repetitive overuse injury? 07:10 How does OCD develop over time? 09:59 How to mitigate the risk of repetitive overuse injuries. 13:17 Hybrid strength and conditioning. 16:26 A study on elbow loading. 19:48 Early warning signs of elbow pain. 23:27 What causes osteoporosis in the elbow? 30:20 How long does it take to heal from an injury? 32:44 How to return to sport. 35:33 What do you do with osteochondritis? 39:17 Surgical Treatment for OCD. 41:52 What do you do if you have OCD? 44:16 How long does recovery take? 46:49 When to start weight-bearing.
