My 22” Weber Smokey Mountain is pregnant and carrying a baby! Weber Smokey mountain smokers are singled wall smokers that are loved by many but have an inherent problem when conditions are breezy. Being a single walled smoker means that the insulation properties of the smoker aren’t the best when used in either colder or windy locations. Rather than building a cook shack or enclosure for the WSM that isn’t as aesthetically pleasing I opted to use what I already had and nested my smaller 14” WSM into its bigger sibling - the 22” WSM. While this might seem silly to put a smoker inside a smoker that it isn’t so insane when you consider the effort and cost it would take to build a windshield apparatus for this particular smoker. I already owned both smokers but found I was using the 14” smoker because of the volume of food I was cooking and for its fuel efficiency. Less volume of space to heat the less fuel used. The idea came to me when I was thinking of the famous Russian “Matryoshka” nesting dolls. The idea paid off and I think this is the first attempt I have ever seen (that I am aware of) of using a Weber within a Weber. It looks cool especially for die hard Weber fans but more importantly the cooking temperature is spot on stable in windy conditions AND the fuel consumption is far more efficient and predictable. It’s a win win! The best part about this setup is nothing is dangerous about the setup - I’d argue it’s safer due to being double enclosed and there is no fear of things burning up or melting down since all the silicone and plastic parts in the smokers were designed for high heat applications. My brisket came out perfect and probably one of the most stress free cooks I have done to date. Make yourself your own “Meatryoshka” smoker and find yourself a 22” WSM smoker to house either a smaller 18” or 14” WSM. You won’t regret it. Use the “Meatryoshka method” to make the WSM the perfect smoker.
