Ida B. Wells was an investigative journalist, sociologist, educator, and a fearless leader in the civil rights movement. She co-founded the NAACP, fought for women’s suffrage, and risked her life to expose the brutal reality of lynching in America. She is a true American hero. I wanted to paint her for Black History Month, but the more I learned about her story, the more I realized how essential it was to include the history of lynching, and the more I saw parallels in current histories. Education, remembrance, open dialogue, and joining Ida in the fight against silence are what moves us toward a better future. Some statistics from policeviolencereport.org --At least 1,252 people were killed by police in 2024. The Highest amount in the last decade. --616 killings began with police responding to suspected non-violent offenses or cases where no crime was reported. 152 of which were stopped for a traffic violation. --Police disproportionately kill black people every year. --Officers were charged with a crime in less than one percent of all killings by police.
