Vol. 8 of the GMI Jukebox series features a smooth, stripped-back take on Sade’s iconic track “Smooth Operator” — a song that helped define the sound of 1980s sophisti-pop. Originally released in 1984, the track blends soul, jazz, and soft rock into an effortlessly cool arrangement that continues to influence artists across genres. This cover brings a groovier edge to the original, performed by two GMI students — Anamika Menon (Vocals) and Aarav Pradhan (Guitar) — alongside Lucas Fixel, faculty of drums at GMI for both the August '24 and January '25 terms and a member of the GMI Tribe. The session highlights the power of collaboration across experience levels, capturing a shared musical language through feel, timing, and restraint. 🎤 Vocals: Anamika Menon🎸 Guitar: Aarav Pradhan🥁 Cajon: Lucas Fixel 🎧 Recorded by: Mrigank Singh & Sarthak Rastogi🎚 Mixed by: Mrigank Singh📽️ Director of Photography: Deepak Goel📍 Shot at: GMI Studio 📺 Explore the full GMI Jukebox playlist for more live studio sessions featuring GMI students and faculty — reimagining classics, uncovering new textures, and keeping the spirit of collaboration alive.
