The name "Biligiri" means "white hill" in Kannada, referring to the mist that often covers the peaks or the white rock face visible from afar. Atop the hill stands the ancient and sacred Biligiri Ranganathaswamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Ranganatha (a form of Vishnu). It is an important pilgrimage site, especially for the local Soliga tribal community, who hold a special bond with this hill and its deity.
