Survivor’s Guilt Many people in recovery know the feeling: looking back at the people we drank or used with and realizing some of them didn’t make it. Some are still struggling. Some are gone. And we’re still here. That can bring up a powerful emotion often called survivor’s guilt — wondering why we got another chance when others didn’t. Recovery teaches us that our sobriety isn’t something to feel guilty about. It’s something to be grateful for and something we can use to help others. The best way to honor those who didn’t make it is to live well, stay sober, and carry the message to the next person who still has a chance.
