Join me on an adventure to Snowdonia amidst 70 mph gales and torrential rain for some truly spectacular light! Landscape photography in Wales doesn’t get much more intense than this. In this video, I head deep into Snowdonia National Park (Eryri) during gale force winds and heavy rain, chasing fleeting moments of light in some of the most dramatic conditions the UK can offer. Storms like this are often seen as bad weather for photography—but for me, they’re where the magic happens. As the rain sweeps across the mountains and the wind tears through the valleys, the light becomes something extraordinary. Brief breaks in the cloud transform the landscape, creating scenes that remind me of Old Master oil paintings—soft highlights, deep shadows, muted colours, and an almost timeless atmosphere. This is UK landscape photography at its rawest. Wet lenses, numb hands, and constant movement are part of the process, but so is the reward: moments of beautiful, painterly light breaking through chaos. Snowdonia’s mountains, ridgelines, and valleys come alive when the weather turns wild, and Wales proves once again why it’s one of the most inspiring places in the world for landscape photographers. In this video I cover technical photography principles such as patience, composition and compare conditions of light to old mater oil paintings of Albert Bierstadt. In this video, I share: Landscape photography in extreme weather conditions Shooting in gale force winds and rain How storm light can resemble classical oil paintings The emotional and visual impact of dramatic weather Why Snowdonia is perfect for moody, atmospheric photography The changing light during the storm felt less like modern photography and more like standing inside a painting—where light is sculpted, not just seen. These fleeting moments are what keep me coming back to the mountains, no matter how hard the conditions get. If you enjoy cinematic landscape photography, moody mountain scenes, and seeing how bad weather can create beautiful images, this one’s for you.
