Honoring Hachiko - The Most Loyal Dog - In A Painting

The story of Hachiko is such a heartbreaking one, but exhibits the unwavering loyalty of dogs. Hachiko was a dog that lived in Japan and followed his owner, a college professor, every day to the train station in Shibuya. Sadly, one day in 1925, the professor passed away at work, leaving Hachiko to continue to wait at the station…for over 9 years. When researching this painting, original photos of Hachiko were only in black and white, which is why I chose the muted gray background and continued some of those grays in the dog. However, I wanted to bring him back to life a bit by adding in what would have been his natural coloring. Since a lei can be a symbol of honor and respect, I placed one around his neck in the painting. I ordered a lei from a local flower shop and placed it on my own dog’s necks at the time to get proper placement. The expression on his face is kind of a wide-eyed one, forever looking for his owner. I’m happy to bring this painting to the Cherry Blossom Festival where I hope if those that don’t already know the story of this incredible dog have the chance to learn about him and the impression he made on the people of Japan and the world.
