On August 30, the world observes the International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearance. Enforced disappearances are a serious crime, as a result of which representatives of the state or groups under their control deprive a person of liberty, leaving him without any means of communication with his family and without the protection of the law. Over the whole period of Russian occupation since 2014, there have been 44 victims of enforced disappearances in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine in Crimea and Sevastopol. 6 of them were later found dead, 19 were released, 3 abductees were convicted, and 1 person was extradited by Russian occupation administration. The enforced disappearances are a true face of the Russian aggression against Ukraine and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights at the centre of Europe. Ukraine calls once again on politicians of the democratic world, human rights organizations and other public organizations, as well as the international media, to increase the pressure on Russia to provide information on the disappeared. Those who participated in or ordered the disappearances must be held to account. Ukraine also calls the international community redouble its efforts to hold Russia to account for its acts of aggression and human rights abuses, release all Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars it has wrongfully detained, and return full control of the Crimean peninsula to Ukraine. #FindandFree #DayoftheDisappeared
