A painting originally by Ernst Klimt, which was then reworked by the famous Viennese Secessionist Gustav Klimt after his brother’s unexpected death at 29 years old, sold for £2.2 million ($2.8 million) at Sotheby’s Old Master & 19th Century Evening Auction in London. Did you know this painting is actually a Klimt family portrait? Painted by both Gustav and Ernst Klimt, ‘Hanswurst Delivering an Impromptu Performance in Rothenburg’ was completed by Gustav in 1894 after the untimely death of his younger brother Ernst in 1892. Gustav added nine family members, including his lifelong companion Emilie Flöge and Ernst’s widow Helene Flöge. Sotheby’s specialist Emma Gordon tells us more about the sisters.
