Along the path of childhood memories, I walked 4+ miles to the artistic Café Winuwuk & art gallery Sonnenhof, designed and built in the early 1920s by the famous artist and expressionist architect Prof. Bernhard Hoetger. The design of Café Winuwuk followed the vision of artists Walter and Dore Degener who wanted to give the "young art" of the 1920s a home, the art gallery Sonnenhof, and connect it with a "coffee house". WINUWUK is not a fantasy name but stands for "Weg Im Norden Und Wunder Und Kunst" (Nordic path and wonder and art). In 1939, some parts of the building were declared to be "entartet" (degenerate) by the Nazis and had to be removed or painted over. Following the end of the 2nd World War until the 1950s the buildings served as a British officers' casino. Family Degener regained control over Café Winuwuk in 1953 and returned the buildings and interior design to their original form.
