480 Otis Fattening Up

October 1, 2023, around 4:15 PM AKDT ‪@explorebears‬ Brooks Falls cam 68 days after returning from hibernation, with little more than skin and bones, Otis worked hard for his tummy! He’s around 28 years old ~ that’s close to 90 in human years! He wasn’t quite as plump as he had been by this date in years past, but he looked great! He looked younger than he did last year, and was so alert, energetic and focused! #focuslikeotis He continued to make the rounds, he knew where the fish were to be found, and caught live fish whenever he could. Dying salmon aren’t as rich in calories, DOA even less so, but there’s no such thing as an unattractive calorie to a bear! The bears have to consume a year’s amount of food in about six months. Most of their diet consists of vegetation until the salmon run begins! Otis hasn’t been seen on the cams since October 19, but if he’s not denning, I think he’s still eating his way through the lower river. He looked pretty unstoppable at the time.
