HOLYOKE, Mass. — The newly constructed Peck School showcases innovative educational design with grade-specific color schemes, advanced technology systems, and flexible learning spaces tailored for middle school students. Sean Sheedy, director of Facilities and Maintenance for the Holyoke Public Schools, led a recent tour highlighting the building's key features, which include separate wings for each grade level with distinct color palettes chosen specifically for different age groups. "The sixth grade wing uses younger colors like yellows and greens, while seventh and eighth grade hallways feature different color schemes based on the age group," Sheedy explained during the tour. Key technological features include: • Interactive displays in every classroom with adjustable lighting systems • "Top Cat" speaker systems that amplify teachers' voices • Keypad entry systems for all classrooms • Individual student lockers throughout the building The school's flexible learning spaces feature a covered outdoor courtyard with modular furniture for outdoor classes, small group rooms for specialized instruction, and mini media centers on each grade level that can be customized by teachers. Specialized facilities include a full STEM lab for robotics projects, art rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and soundproof garage doors for large projects, a fitness room with exercise equipment, and occupational therapy spaces with specialized flooring and equipment. The cafeteria doubles as a performance venue with theatrical lighting, professional sound systems, and a full stage connected directly to the music room. The music facility includes soundproof practice rooms and direct stage access for performances. Safety and accessibility features include emergency generator power for full building functionality during outages, secure entry systems with camera monitoring, and full ADA compliance throughout the facility. The building serves students in grades six through eight, with dedicated outdoor recreation areas including half-court basketball courts in school colors and direct access to Crosier Field for additional activities.
