Keetmanshoop Municipality has warned residents against indiscriminately dumping waste in open spaces next to skip containers instead of inside them. Municipality Environmental Health Assistant Eliaser Ekandjo appealed to residents to stop illegal dumping that degrades the environment and poses health risks. "People do not care about the community or environment—perhaps due to laziness. It comes from a person's mindset and upbringing. Sometimes residents arrive with wheelbarrows without proper tools, but they can use a spade or shovel to load waste into the skip. This is negligence." Ekandjo said the municipality has increased skip container deployment to curb illegal dumping. "Community members near skips inform us of illegal dumping. We note vehicle number plates and deploy peace officers to track culprits for prosecution." Ekandjo emphasised that maintaining a clean town requires collective effort, and he urged residents to report violations. Some residents, like Stephen Shipanga, whom NBC News spoke to, blamed illegal dumping on insufficient and poorly placed skip containers. "We have a skip container, but it's far from where we live and often overflowing. When cleaning yards, we dump nearby, as there is no container close by. Over three years here, I've seen people regularly dispose of waste in open spaces. We're all guilty."
