Quit Smoking to heal Back Pain There are so many small things we can do each and every day to help manage acute and chronic pain. Many of these things are often overlooked. Smoking cigarettes is obviously not a positive thing to do for your health. Smoking can cause Cancer, Emphysema, blood pressure issues, and more. But did you know it could affect your pain levels too? Nicotine inhibits blood flow and prevents tissue through the entire body from getting oxygen and nutrients. When this occurs, it can weaken the spine and back muscles. Because Nicotine also restricts blood flow to the cushion between your vertebrae, there is often an increased degeneration. This breakdown of the cushion will cause chronic back pain. A study performed at Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern, found that smoking also interferes with the brain circuit associated with pain. Scans were taken of two parts of the brain. One region is responsible for addiction, and the other for motivated learning. Smoking increases brain activity and the more those two regions of the brain connect, the less resilience the person has to chronic pain. It is suggested, that if you choose to quit, contact your doctor and get involved in a smoking cessation program. Mentally, people who tend to be in chronic pain, use things like nicotine to cope. When you quit your unhealthy coping mechanism for healthier ones, you will still be forced to deal with the after effects. Combining nicotine withdraw with chronic pain can make the pain feel worse. However, you can choose to use multiple other all natural management tactics along with quitting smoking to help manage that increase. It won't last forever. In fact, many of the tactics we've discussed will help with the mental and physical aspects of quitting smoking. Meditation, acupuncture, healthy eating, and exercise all aid in the length of withdraw. Before starting or stopping anything, though, have a full discussion with your doctor about the symptoms, feelings, and increase in pain you will feel when you quit. They will help you ease into it, and control the symptoms. In the end, you will not only be helping your pain management, but you will be cleaning your lungs and adding years onto your life. Exercising, stamina, and pain thresholds will all increase as time passes.
