Meet the Union Soldier Who Lowered the Flag at Fort Sumter, April 14, 1861

Kurt Luther, founder of Civil War Photo Sleuth, recently identified the Union soldier pictured here as William Henry Hamner, who lowered the American flag inside Fort Sumter on April 14, 1861, after Maj. Robert Anderson negotiated the evacuation of Fort Sumter. Here's the story, in Hamner's own words. Read Kurt's column in Military Images magazine: https://www.militaryimagesmagazine-di... "Life on the Civil War Research Trail" is hosted by Ronald S. Coddington, Editor and Publisher of Military Images magazine.
