In the Flanagan Lab at UC Irvine, researchers study how neural stem cells develop into the many cell types that make up the brain and how understanding these processes could allow us to repair damaged brain cells. In this episode, you'll see how scientists grow neural stem cells, identify the proteins that reveal their identities, and use microfluidic devices to separate and analyze different cell populations. By combining cell biology, engineering, and advance imaging, the lab is uncovering how brain cells form, how tumors like glioblastoma evolve, and how the brain might one day be rebuilt cell by cell. The How It’s Made: Neuroscience series takes you behind the scenes to show how new tools and methods are revealing the brain’s inner workings and helping us better understand how learning and memory happen.
