Fist things first.... is Marrakech a safe city? Absolutely! I've been there many times and would recommend it to anyone traveling to northern Africa. Will locals try to scam you if you give them the chance? No doubt, but... I think it's safe to say they would do that in most cities around the world. I've been scammed in taxis in Spain, markets in Morocco, I've even been scammed over the phone in Colorado. This video wasn't created to scare you out of traveling to Marrakech (or Spain or Colorado), it was designed to help you stay safe by avoiding one of the oldest and easiest Marrakech scams in the book.... the tannery scam. Here's how it works. You visit Marrakech with your family. You probably don't look like the locals and you're in the Marrakech medina. You're an easy target. A young kid approaches you in very friendly tone. The kid will ask you some questions to get an idea of what you're doing in the city. Usually it ends by him "helping you out." This street is closed, I'll show you a shortcut, or let me show you the tannery, it's free of charge. Well, we'd been in Marrakech too long to know that nothing is "free." Let me also mention that the tannery has been around for thousands of years. It's the manufacturing station for making all their leather products. The young kid will walk you to his friend of family member in the tannery who will then give you a tour. The tour was only 5 bucks but the smell was priceless. Let me warn you, the smell is worst than the scam, it is horrific, but hey... how many times do you get to say you've been to the tannery in Marrakech? The tour guide will give you a piece of mint to put up your nose. Once the tour is over he walks you over to his buddies who work in the actual shop. This is where they get you. You know how you wait forever in a roller coaster line, then you experience the ride, and the overpriced gift shop is waiting for you as you exit? Same concept here. They put all the overpriced items at the end of the "tannery experience" hoping that you'll pay the ridiculous price because you experienced the whole ride. Once you've spent an outrageous price, guess who's waiting for you outside? Yep, you guessed it, that same kid. He's there to "show you you're way back" to the Marrakech medina and this time it's not for free. Here's my point: Visit Marrakech, experience it all, but stay safe and don't get scammed with expensive merchandise that you can buy for half the price in the market.
