In this frank and deeply personal talk, Andy Hall charts his struggle with mental illness. Yet somehow he manages to deliver an uplifting message about the things that truly make us whole and happy. From the benefits of helping others to the joy of physical exercise, his story tells us something about ourselves and the things we can influence in our minds and bodies. Drawing upon his experience as a mentor and mentee, Andy Hall shares insights into his transformation from being a non-runner in 2017 to completing 18 running challenges in 2018. Andy has mentored hundreds of individuals and businesses and won Manchester’s Mentor of the Year Award. This talk was delivered at TEDxBollington on 16 June 2019 and was curated by Sara Knowles. The theme was ‘The Art of Connection’ and is inspired by Bollington’s community - it draws upon how we connect with others, the landscape, our past, present and future. Connections and contrasts inspire and define us as a community. Our speakers convey the art of connection through diverse forms such as communication, design, science, mindfulness, mental health and wellbeing through to the environment and technology. Andy knows first-hand how it feels to sink into severe depression and anxiety but he’s also learned how to combat it. Drawing upon his experience as a mentor and mentee, Andy shares insights into his transformation from being a non-runner in 2017 to completing 18 running challenges in 2018 including 4-half marathons in one month. Andy has mentored hundreds of individuals and businesses and won Manchester's Mentor of the Year Award. He writes and speaks about mental health, how to combat depression, anxiety and being suicidal without medication. He is an ambassador for two charities. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
