Why do our software systems so often become unmaintainable, complex messes? This talk explores emergent complexity - how simple, understandable parts can interact to create powerful, but often unpredictable, systems. We'll examine abstraction as the core tool we use to define these "simple parts" and discuss why we so often get it wrong, leading to code that is either verbose and tangled or over-engineered and full of jargon. This session is a call to action for engineers to move beyond just writing code and to take ownership of the design process.
