The reaction is named after the German scientist August Wilhelm von Hofmann. The reaction involves conversion of amide in to amine. The important factor here is alkyl group attached with carbonyl migrated to amine nitrogen with elimination of CO2. Hence the reaction is rearrangement with rearranged carbon skeleton. The key factor of the reaction is the product will be one carbon less than reactant. The reaction is also called as Hoffmann degradation.
