Iran’s Shahed-136 drone struck the Saudi Aramco oil refining facility at Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia’s key energy hub, early Monday, according to several social media posts online. The attack prompted the temporary shutdown of the Ras Tanura refinery, as per a Bloomberg report. The strike triggered a fire at the site, however as per reports blaze was small and controlled. The drone strike on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery comes amid rising Middle East tensions, with recent Iranian missile and drone attacks on Gulf states and Israel following international military airstrikes. Ras Tanura, located on Saudi Arabia’s eastern coast along the Gulf, is one of the kingdom’s main refining hubs within its oil infrastructure network. Footage on social media shows large plumes of smoke rising from the site as hostilities continue to escalate in the Middle East following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The attacks on Iran have sent a chill through world markets. Shares opened sharply lower in Tokyo and Australia early on Monday and oil prices soared.
