I am using a 10"x 20" stretched canvas and creating a landscape with some extreme shapes and colors as a plan. I am making up a container of colors that I will use for the sky area. I also created the land area colors in a separate container ready to be added after I pour the puddle of sky color. I added some color to both the sky and the land areas to help the next paint I add flow. First I dump the colors from the container for the sky and then I scoop the colors from the other container onto the lower part of the canvas with the small shallow plastic square butter pat dish .(perfect for scooping!)I have an edge catcher made of some relatively stiff plastic that I hold against the edge of the canvas. I tilt the canvas to allow the paint to flow across it and cover as well as stretch and create patterns as it flows. I do have not enough color in the sky area. So I use more paint (from the bottles of paints mixed with additives to help them flow). I tilt the canvas again(and again) to meld the paint that was on the canvas with the new paint. I tip multiple directions and add the paint that I allowed to flow onto the edge catcher to flow back again into the patterns. I remove and reuse the paint on the edge catcher using a silicone spatula, adding it to areas that need paint repeatedly. I do some manipulating/ melding of the design, pushing pulling dragging swiping to spread paint into new areas using the silicone spatula. I use a bamboo skewer to make small adjustments to the horizon between the land and the sky and to make a few major sky color additions too. I have a small amount of paint saved and I use it in a variety of places. I added paint on the edges to add some interest. I love how surreal this piece is and I want to do more!! My "pouring" mixture or "recipe" is simple- and starts with 2 parts(estimated) Gac 800 from "Golden " added into any acrylic paint color 8 parts, (amounts are always estimated) This starts the mixing process. Mix the paint and GAC thoroughly. Next, I add my mixed Floetrol and (half )Deco Art pouring medium. (shake it first every time! )The truth is lately that's my go-to. I add the same (or more) ounces as the first two ingredients and mix everything thoroughly. The consistency is usually medium body weight but other weights are usable with minor adjustments. To mix, if you use squeeze bottles as I do, add a marble and shake your paints every time before you use them. All my acrylic paints are mixed in advance and contained and stored in squeeze bottles. If you are not using squeeze bottles I suggest using a container that has a lid. I have often used the 4oz size plastic deli containers and the paint keeps for a long time in them but you still will have to stir before using the mix again because the Floetrol and other flow agents will rise to the top between uses. None of my acrylic paint has any added silicon. To create the pearlescent effects seen in most of my artworks I use "Golden's" Iridescent pearl "Fine" added to colors. By "eye " until I am pleased with what I see. Every day I learn new things. I will never stop experimenting and I am happy to share what I discover with you.
