Accomplished film, television, and Broadway actor Howard Caine, best known for his role as Major Wolfgang Hochstetter on the classic '60s sitcom "Hogan's Heroes," possessed another talent unknown to many of his fans... until now! He was an award-winning folk musician, specializing in the Appalachian clawhammer style of banjo playing! Howard Caine's son, singer-songwriter and guitarist Lyle Caine, has shared this extremely rare recording of Howard performing "Sail Away" (accompanied by a photo slideshow). Excerpt from "An Interview with Lyle Caine" by Bob Piekiel for Banjo Newsletter: Many readers will recognize this man as the intimidating Gestapo officer Major Hochstetter from the popular 1960’s TV series “Hogan’s Heroes.” In real life he was Howard Caine, professional actor, father, family man, and, a champion clawhammer banjo player! A long-time folk and blues musician, Howard began studying Appalachian-style banjo in the mid-1960s. Shortly after that he had mastered it to the point where he began performing professionally, and winning a total of 29 contests and awards, right up to his untimely death in 1993. His son Lyle Caine, an accomplished rock guitarist and radio DJ, has been the “keeper of the flame” of his father’s accomplishments, holding onto his instruments, awards, recordings, and memories. Because Howard and his family re-located from the southeastern United States to the west coast, many of us back here in the east never heard his playing. This article is thus likely to be a surprise for many readers. There have been many articles published about Hogan’s Heroes, as well as a very impressive book, but rarely has anything been discussed about Howard’s banjo playing. Lyle Caine eagerly agreed to the following interview to tell the story of his father’s banjo career. Read the full interview at https://banjonews.com/2010-05/howard_...
