Tennis Serve - Pinpoint vs Platform Stance - Which Stance Is Better? There are two main serve stances in tennis, the platform serve stance and the pinpoint serve stance. There is also a third serve stance which is used rarely but one of the biggest servers in the history of tennis used it, Andy Roddick, and that is the hybrid serve stance. Each stance will give you pros and cons, in this free video lesson, Coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will break down the two main stances - the platform and pinpoint. The way you position your feet, your serve stance, will have a huge impact on your tennis serve. You can't fire a cannon from a canoe! If your serve stance is not ideal, let's say your feet are out of position or you use mainly one leg to drive with, your serve will never reach its maximum potential and you'll always struggle to have maximum power from your leg drive. On the flip side of that, if you position your feet well and use a good serve stance, you'll have great balance throughout the serve motion and you'll be able to drive upwards into the contact point, using both legs well to give you maximum power on your serve! Which stances do the best tennis players in the world use? As of August 2019, the top ten male tennis players use a mixture of both stances, 60% use the platform serve stance and 40% use the pinpoint stance. Players who use the platform serve stance include - Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem, Kei Nishikori (who has used a pinpoint stance for most of his career prior to switching), Fabio Fognini and Stefano Tsitsipas who is the tallest player inside the top 10 who uses the platform stance. Players who use the pinpoint serve stance include - Rafa Nadal, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov. Nadal is the shortest player in the top 10 who uses the pinpoint stance, with Zverev, Medvedev and Khachanov all being two metres tall. Let's break down each serve stance now. Platform Serve Stance This is where you keep both feet apart during the entire service motion until you jump off the ground. Normally the distance between both feet is around shoulder width. This gives the player a wider base and allows you to feel balanced throughout the service motion. Because of the positioning of both feet, players can really use each leg to drive off the ground, increasing the height at which they make contact. This explosive leg drive suits players who want to make the most of their height on the serve and also helps them on their second serve when they go for the kick serve in tennis. Pinpoint Serve Stance In this stance, the player will have a gap between both feet at the start of their motion and once they start their serve swing, will bring the back foot forward to join the front foot. For right-handed tennis players, this means that the right leg will lift off the ground and join the left foot as they go into the knee bend. This shift in the foot positioning allows the player to use a rocking motion during their serve, starting with their body weight on the front leg, then leaning back onto the back leg and then transferring their body weight forward prior to the jump. This weight shift allows the player to really propel themselves into the court for the contact point and gives them extra body weight behind their serve. Which Stance Is Right For Me? The best way for you to find the correct stance for your game is to test out both and experiment to see which one suits your game more. Some players will benefit greatly from using the platform serve stance which gives most tennis players better balance, others will benefit more from using the pinpoint serve stance.
