Bikini Atoll was the site of 67 nuclear bomb tests conducted by the United States between 1946 and 1958 including Operation Crossroads in 1946 and Castle Bravo (first Hydrogen bomb) in 1954. It was reforested in a perfect grid pattern, which can still be seen today. The atoll is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bikini Island, the largest island in the atoll, was set up to be a resort. However, air service to the atoll stopped abruptly in 2007, ending consistent tourism. The atoll is now only accessible by taking boats from other island groups, hundreds of miles away. Between 2007 and August 2023, several caretakers lived on the island to maintain buildings and monitor radiation levels around the island. However, with the recent depletion of the Bikini Compensation Fund, those science caretakers have left, leaving behind a ghost town.
