Videographer: Juntaro Ogata | 方順 (@shuncleopasfang) Linktree: https://linktr.ee/shuncleopasfang In Japanese culture, railways are often regarded as a vital link connecting people and places, symbolizing journeys, farewells, and reunions. In Makoto Shinkai's animated film 5 Centimeters per Second, railway elements appear throughout the story, profoundly illustrating the emotional distance between the protagonists. At the beginning of the film, Takaki Tōno and Akari Shinohara cross a railway crossing together, symbolizing their shared journey. However, at the end of the story, the crossing reappears, and the first-generation Odakyu 5000 series train passes by in a flash. By this time, the two had drifted apart, and the railway had become an insurmountable barrier between them. The First-Generation Odakyu 5000 Series Train The first-generation Odakyu 5000 series train made its debut in 1969 as the first commuter train of Odakyu Electric Railway equipped with air conditioning. Its body featured an ivory white base color, accentuated by a royal blue belt line running along the sides. Initially introduced in four-car sets, six-car sets were added starting in 1978. The front design closely resembled the Odakyu 2600 series and 4000 series, with a distinctive upper light that only illuminated one side when passing another train, giving it a recognizable appearance. With the introduction of newer 3000 series and 4000 series trains, the 5000 series began to be phased out in 2006 and was officially retired from service in March 2012. The Second-Generation Odakyu 5000 Series Train The second-generation Odakyu 5000 series train was introduced in 2019 and officially entered service on March 26, 2020. This series consists of fixed ten-car formations, featuring a streamlined exterior design with a slightly wider body to enhance passenger comfort. The interior emphasizes openness, utilizing transparent materials for partitions and luggage racks. The floor adopts a wood grain style, while seats are brightly colored—regular seats in orange and priority seats in blue. Each car is equipped with dedicated spaces for wheelchairs and baby strollers, as well as multiple air purifiers and surveillance cameras to ensure passenger safety and comfort. On the technical side, the train is powered by Mitsubishi Electric's full-SiC VVVF inverter control system, significantly improving energy efficiency. Additionally, it introduces the New Train Integrated Operation System (N-TIOS), enabling high-efficiency data transmission and management. Today, the second-generation Odakyu 5000 series train continues to carry passengers along the Odakyu Line, embodying a new mission. However, despite the changes in design and technology, the symbolic meaning of Japanese railways—connecting people and places—has remained unchanged. Just as the railway crossing in 5 Centimeters per Second once symbolized a shared journey and later became a metaphor for separation, railways in Japan continue to witness countless stories of connection and parting in people's everyday lives.
