A video by Balázs Faludi, Planning & Navigation | The MIRACLE Project | Department of Biomedical Engineering | University of Basel As part of the Planning and Navigation group of the MIRACLE project, we are developing an application for the visualization of volumetric medical datasets in virtual reality (VR). The stereo view of a head-mounted display (HMD) enhances the sense of depth and scale, provides an intuitive way to inspect 3D scans, and helps surgeons to better understand complex cases. One of the main challenges of this project is the requirement of rendering at least 90 images per second per eye to provide a comfortable and immersive user experience. This is achieved by a number of performance optimizations, such as empty space skipping and foveated rendering. The software has a wide range of possible applications for education, training, simulation, surgical planning, patient education, remote collaboration and assistance.
