(19 Feb 1996) TYPE: English/Nat Ten years on, former Philippines president Corazon Aquino looks back on the peaceful revolution that installed her into power. She says it was really guts that made her run against the formidable dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who ruled her country for 20 years. Mrs Aquino has paid tribute to the courage of the Filipino people who, she says, thought not of themselves but only of their country in the struggle for freedom. Former Philippines president Corazon Aquino returns to the same hall where she took her presidential oath on February 25th, 1986. Stepping back into the historic venue, she's here this time to launch a book about the People Power revolution which installed her as leader. She is in the company of the same people who supported her long before the revolution took place, as they fought for democracy and freedom for Filipinos from the hands of Ferdinand Marcos. "Duet for Edsa" - named after the street that gave birth to the people power revolution - is a set of two books compiled by journalists, documenting events that led to the peaceful uprising a decade ago. Cory, as she is referred to by most Filipinos, has taken the opportunity to invite people to join her in the anniversary celebration of what she views as the Filipinos' shining moment. It is celebrated every February 25, the day the Marcos family left the country ten years ago. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I hope that the multitudes will be there to join us at the Edsa shrine on February 25, so that we can pray together and again give thanks for all mighty god for blessing us with the restoration of democracy." SUPER CAPTION: Corazon Aquino, former Philippines President This song about freedom has become a popular tune sung by oppositionists to the Marcos administration....it has never been forgotten. UPSOUND: (Singer singing "Bayan Ko (My Country)" in Tagalog) It is in this room that she was sworn in as President of the Philippines on February 25, 1986. It was to be the final day of the peaceful revolution because it was also on that day that Marcos and his family left the country. More than three years after she moved out of the presidential palace, Cory Aquino is now back in her private home. Looking back she says she doesn't regret running against Marcos. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I look back and I said, what possessed me to get all that....really it's a case of being gutsy to challenge as I said, a dictator, but anyway, I believed it was what I had to do so I just went right ahead and did it." SUPER CAPTION: Corazon Aquino, former Philippines President. Marcos, who was forced to live in exile in Hawaii after he was ousted, died there on September 28, 1988. His body is back in his hometown in Ilocos province, but his family is still waiting to fulfill his wish... for him to be laid to rest at the Heroes Memorial. Since her presidency, Cory has remained popular among the people. She believes the gradual awakening of the Filipinos started after her husband's assassination. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino was Marcos' staunch critic. He was shot as he was disembarking from a plane that brought him home from the United States on August 21, 1983. SOUNDBITE: (English) "In the Edsa people power revolution, perhaps the main or the outstanding virtue exhibited by the Filipino people was selflessness, you know people went there not thinking about themselves and their safety but just offering themselves for the country and for each other."
