Johann Sebastian #Bach wrote several organ arrangements of "Allein #Gott in der Höh sei #Ehr", including #BWV 715, which is part of a collection of 56 chorale preludes (BWV 714-765). In this work, the cantus firmus sounds in the upper voice, but is interrupted by rapid scale runs after each verse line. Thus, this arrangement was most certainly not intended as an accompaniment to congregational singing. Rather, it surprises by a very unusual character, with numerous diminished seventh chords, strange harmonies and surprising resolutions, so that Bach here instead demonstrates how daringly one can depart from the harmonizations probably expected by a congregation. Today is #Easter Sunday, and the Gloria-hymn "Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr" is particularly appropriate for Easter Sunday. First, the organ traditionally falls silent on Maundy Thursday and does not sound again until the Gloria on Easter Sunday. And second, the melody of this hymn is an adaptation of the Gloria of the Easter chorale mass "Lux et origo".
