Glass blowing is a traditional and artistic process of shaping molten glass by inflating it with a blowpipe and manipulating it using tools, gravity, and motion. There are two primary techniques: free-blowing, which allows for organic shapes formed by hand, and mold-blowing, which produces more uniform pieces using molds. Tools like the marver, jacks, and pontil rod help shape the hot glass, while color is added using metal oxides such as cobalt (blue) or gold (red). A variant called lampworking uses a torch for smaller, detailed pieces like beads and scientific instruments. Historically rooted in the Roman Empire and refined in Venetian Murano glass, glass blowing evolved into both a craft and fine art. Today, it's practiced by studio artists and industrial designers for creating sculptures, lighting, and functional objects. Artists like Dale Chihuly helped elevate it into contemporary art. Though beautiful, the process is physically demanding and hazardous, requiring safety measures such as heat-resistant gear and proper training. This wonderful lady not only made this hippopotamus for us from the coloured glass we chose, but explained what she was doing while doing it.
