The waterfall scene I used a new silvery look called CleverInkblot, check out my website if you are interested. This is one of my longer videos that I wanted to make to address a question I get a lot, "What is Cinematic?" "How do I get my videos to look more cinematic?" I think this word is overused and frankly hijacked by photographers, and I felt the need to give my own take. It was always really confusing for me too see what other Youtubers were saying to be cinematic, to me, the word means something that resembles a feature film. So here are 7 things I think are most important for modern visual storytelling. The topic is quite comprehensive and far reaching and as a result I found it very difficult to have a consistent tone throughout, but I think I managed to cover the main ideas, albeit a bit briskly. Like all my videos, I've put my words for you to judge on the screen and it's up to you to decide if i successfully demonstrated my points whether successfully or as an example of what not to do. I only wish I was able to improve upon the audio section and soundtracks, which I think were tonally adjacent at times, but if you like them you can download them by supporting me on Patreon. I I also upgraded to a Neumann U87ai, I have a mini review on my website, hopefully you can hear an improvement in overall audio quality. It's actually my most expensive purchase of all my equipment. / cleverghost Other directorial notes: Mainly shot in Jiangxi on the Sigma FP and Zeiss Otus 28mm f1.4. One or two scenes used the 55mm f1.4. Really looks like Master Primes for certain shots, a bit too sharp and probably could have used stronger softening, but maybe I'm comparing too much to my previous video. This one I primarily implemented f5.6, which I think has more DOF when you get pretty close. Each video is also a mini test for me on the aperture for each lens, maybe next time I will try f2.8 on the Otus, can't decide it if will be Blackmagic or the Sigma. I've been trying to decide whether I like Sigma or Blackmagic better, my last few videos are basically a personal camera/lens comparison, I think my conclusion is still Sigma is overall better, but there are some highlights and colorgrading preferences I find with the blackmagic. Sometimes it's not about which image is better, it's which feels better and the one that you like more, which isn't always the "best". I feel that way toward movies as well, there are great movies and then our favorites, not always ranked the same. I like having each video feel unique and the last one was a bit slower so I wanted something of a different pace for this one, but I wonder if that was best for this video. These videos are educational but they are also for me as I usually learn something by explaining it. I think presenting in my style, not really explain in detail but through demonstration instead, is a more practical and entertaining way but if you don't find the ideas communicated clearly I am listening.
