This fracture was first described by Paul Segond back in 1879. It occurs at a specific spot on the knee, right on the anterolateral part of the tibia. Typically, this fracture arises due to internal knee injuries, especially damage to the anterior cruciate ligament. In the past, it was believed that this fracture resulted from injuries to certain ligaments or tendons. However, experts now think that several structures might be associated with this fracture, such as the anterolateral ligament or the fascia of the biceps femoris tendon. So, what does this fracture mean for the recovery from ACL surgery? Recent studies compared the recovery of patients with and without this fracture. The findings showed that the recovery was pretty much the same, regardless of the presence of the Segond fracture. Moreover, even if the fracture wasn't repaired, it didn't negatively impact post-surgery recovery. In conclusion, while the Segond fracture is a distinct type of knee fracture, it doesn't seem to have a significant impact on the recovery from ACL surgery.
