Coercive and Controlling Abusive Behaviors

Thank you for registering for “Coercive and Controlling Abusive Behaviors– What Are They, How They Are Abusive and How to Seek Protection” presented by the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute. April is Victim Rights Awareness Month. This workshop will cover the recent amendment to the definition of abuse in M.G.L. 209A, which adds coercive and controlling behavior. Effective September 2025, this change significantly impacts how abuse is understood in the law. We will review the amendment step by step, discuss the issues it aims to address and explore how it may change survivors’ experiences in court. The session will also highlight how advocates and others can better support survivors under this new definition and provide space for participants to share their perspectives.
