A short demonstration video that covers the underwater technique for partial mask clearing, full flood & clearing and mask remove and replace. These skills are an essential part of any diver training program, but are specifically aimed at our clubs BSAC Ocean Diver Trainees. These skills enable divers to be confident and be in control if a mask leaks small amounts of water, a strap breaks during a dive or a mask is accidentally knocked off, for example. Demonstrated by Club Training Officer - Ian Gray Partial Flood Lift the seal at the bottom of the mask to let in a small amount of water to below eye level. Press on the top of the mask frame, and while tilting your head backwards to look up, breath out through your nose. This will force the water in the mask out. To build your confidence with this skill and technique, you can build up the amount of water you allow into your mask progressively, increasing in small amounts. Full Flood Lift the seal at the top of the mask, or pull mask away from your face, to let it flood completely of water. Press on the top of the mask frame, and while tilting your head backwards to look up, breath out through your nose. This will force the water in the mask out. It may require you to repeat this process twice to completely clear the mask of water. Mask Removal and Replace Remove mask completely and continue to breath; either by breathing normally in and out through regulator or by breathing out through nose. Ensure you mask is the right way around before replacing it, by placing your thumb into the nose pocket. Move the strap away from the seal and place back on your face. You do not need to replace the strap at this stage, as it might be useful to check your mask seal is free from leaks first. Press on the top of the mask frame, and while tilting your head backwards to look up, breath out through your nose. This will force the water in the mask out. It may require you to repeat this process twice to completely clear the mask of water. If you are happy there are no leaks, you can then replace the strap around your head, if not already done so. The video is not the only method that can be used to clear a mask of water, whilst underwater. The many instructors and other divers in the club will be more than happy to demonstrate their preferred method and assist you in deciding which method works best for you to complete the skill elements comfortably and confidently.
