The general attack on Zadar lasted a full 5 days. The fighting stopped on October 7, 1991, a truce was signed, and on October 9, an agreement was signed on the withdrawal of JNA personnel and equipment from the barracks in the city. The evacuation began on October 11, and ended on October 21, 1991. There was a lull for several weeks, and after that systematic attacks on Zadar followed again, in which another thirty civilians were killed. However, the established front line remained unchanged until the Maslenica operation in 1993. Absurd, but true. The closest I was to death in those days was on the day when the armistice was signed, i.e. October 7, 1991. After we were informed about the truce, we relaxed, and some Croatian defenders, unknown to me, started shooting Thompson rifles in the air, looking forward to the truce. The five of us went to the nearby house where we intended to stay. One of my friends climbed onto the roof of that house to see the enemies better and while we were debating whether to break down the door and enter, I was against it because the house was Croatian and I said that we would settle under the stairs, the Thompsons were still being shot were ripping the air when a comrade from the roof shouted "Tank, the tank is ahead of us" at that moment a shell hit the ground floor of the house and completely destroyed it, luckily we didn't go inside, a board flew into my legs from the explosion and seriously injured my knees, a couple seconds after that, another shell flew and hit the roof of the single-story building behind me. Then there was silence, the Thompsons fell silent, and they took me to the hospital by car. Thanks to the Thompsons and the Serbian tankman, I have to admit that he shot well, but he didn't succeed in his aim.
