Byron Bay woman Laura Clare shared a “close call” she had in 2008 on social media and has since been “bombarded” with similar stories from women. Speaking to Yahoo News Australia, Laura said “There’s been an unbelievable amount of women telling me about sexual assaults and rapes… It’s a huge problem, and it’s not being spoken about.” The stories come after NSW Upper House MP Jeremy Buckingham pointed to the list of over 60 women who either disappeared or were brutally murdered between 1977 and 2009 on the state’s North Coast. He told members of the state parliament the crimes had not been given proper focus, and to him, it is clear that there was “a serial killer operation on the north coast of NSW, or serial killers”. He claimed “The worst serial killer in the nation’s history has gotten away with it. Some of these were individual incidents; there is no doubt about that. But many are linked, and there is a single perpetrator.” Police have since dismissed the serial killer claims, with one spokesperson saying “To this date, there is no evidence to indicate a common offender was responsible for the disappearances.” However, Laura claims such a theory has been a commonly held belief by locals for years. She now “feels a sense of responsibility” to keep the issue in the spotlight and help bring justice to perpetrators. She said, “There’s so many people walking around with information that could solve cases, and they don’t even know it… I absolutely encourage everybody to go to the police if they have information.” Read more: https://au.news.yahoo.com/byron-bay-w...
