Aston Villa’s Europa League win marred by violent clashes between fans and police Aston Villa see off Young Boys in win marred by away fans fighting with police Peter Lansley at Villa Park Thu 27 Nov 2025 20.08 GMT Share Donyell Malen has a cut to the head and two more goals to his name after leading Aston Villa to the verge of automatic qualification for the last 16 of the Europa League against a backdrop of more crowd violence from Young Boys supporters. The Netherlands striker exemplifies Villa’s strength in depth but this 10th win in 12 games was marred by visiting fans ripping up seats, throwing missiles at stewards and Villa players – one striking Malen – and fighting with police. Since the start of the 2023-24 season, no team has won more European games at home (13 from 15) than Unai Emery’s side. The Villa manager looks a decent bet to win this competition for a fifth time this season. It was in Berne last season that Young Boys fans reacted angrily to a Villa goalscorer when Jhon Durán netted, before being given offside, in his side’s Champions League victory. But their supporters have more history for this sort of trouble after being fined for incidents in Champions League games away to Manchester City and Celtic last season. They surely face more Uefa action after this latest episode. Emery gave the trouble the least oxygen possible – “We need respect for both sides,” the Villa head coach said. “It is not necessary to have what we had today” – but Gerardo Seoane, the Young Boys coach, was more forthcoming. He apologised for the crowd trouble but balanced this by suggesting they perhaps felt provoked by Villa players celebrating near their place in the lower tier of the Doug Ellis Stand. There was a five-minute hold-up after Malen’s second goal. Fighting broke out with police even as Loris Benito, the Young Boys captain, went over to plead for peace from his team’s supporters. At least three trouble-makers were escorted away by police. Travelling fans of Swiss club Young Boys attacked police and stewards at Aston Villa and even cut the head of goalscorer Donyell Malen with a cup thrown at the Dutchman as he celebrated his first of two goals in a 2-1 win. Fans of the Bern club could be seen throwing punches at police and stewards from the away end with some pulled out of the stands and arrested. While the live coverage of the Europa League group-phase game did not focus on the violence, videos taken by supporters in other parts of the ground showed the level of aggression of the travelling fans. After Malen’s second goal, referee Georgi Kabokov halted the game. While the Uefa host broadcaster cameras chose not to cover the trouble, TNT Sports commentator Sam Matterface described many punches being thrown and a young girl caught in the middle at one point. He also said that seats were ripped out and thrown at police officers. The Youngs Boys’ captain Loris Benito appealed to his club’s supporters to calm down, although it appeared to have little effect. Referee Kabokov spoke to both clubs’ managers on the touchline during a pause in the game. In the act of celebrating his first goal, Malen was hit with a number of objects thrown from the away fans’ part of the ground. The reaction of the Villa players was telling with many of those congratulating Malen looking in disbelief at the number of objects raining down on them. Malen was not seriously hurt but he looked surprised to touch his skin and feel blood from a small cut that was visible on his shaven head. Malen scored two first-half goals, and then later substitute Joel Monteiro got a goal for the Swiss in the 90th minute. Young Boys have been sanctioned by Uefa before for the behaviour of their fans. In October last year, the club were fined and ordered to play a game behind closed doors after fans let off flares in a game against Inter Milan. They have been found to have committed similar offences in the past, especially throwing objects onto the pitch at their home Wankdorf Stadium, including smoke bombs. Young Boys boss Gerardo Seoane apologised for fans’ behaviour but admitted they may have been provoked by the Villa players celebrating in front of them. #avfc #FCYB #EuropaLeague Aston Villa vs Young Boys Riots | Young Boys fans clash with police - FCYB Fans in Birmingham © All Rights Reserved to their respected owners
