HELM CRAG near GRASMERE: A Scenic Circular Walk

See HELM CRAG, GRASMERE in this WAINWRIGHT walk 👉 More LAKE DISTRICT walks    • The Lake District: Central Fells   Starting off in the historic lakeland village of Grasmere we take Easdale Road and find our way over a footbridge and onto the valley floor. With Sourmilk Gill at our side we begin the ascent and admire the Sourmilk Gill waterfalls on the way up. Near the top of the falls we see the natural plunge pool ideal for wild swimmers. From here, it is a short distance to Easedale Tarn. The tarn is an ideal place to stop for a break. Tarn Crag towers above and is a Wainwright we can pick up another day. Working our way down the path from Easedale Tarn there are a series of stones we can use to walk on to maintain dry boots. We go left to discover the bridge over Far Easdale Beck, then follow the water down the valley until the wall is reached and we trace it up the fell side. The ascent to Helm Crag has a steep incline with great views back over the valley. Once the grassy plateau is reached we join with walkers on the Greenburn Round and take a short walk to begin the final 50m ascent to Helm Crag’s summit, Howitzer. Travelling to the other end of the fell we see The Lion and The Lamb rock formation, from which, we are afforded great views over the Grasmere and surrounding areas. From here, we head down the fell on a winding but stable path until we reach the wooded area. Then it is an easy path back to the village which partly joins our earlier route. This walk has a waterfall, wild swimming opportunities in the plunge pool and tarn and a Wainwright all in 1 walk. Join me on this scenic circular walk.
