独克宗古城原本是中国保存得最好、最大的藏民群居地。 唐仪凤、调露年间（公元676-679年），土蕃在这里的大龟山顶设立寨堡，名“独克宗”，一个藏语发音包含了两层意思，一为“建在石头上的城堡”，另为“月光城”。后来的古城就是环绕山顶上的寨堡建成的。与此呼应的是在奶子河边的一座山顶上建立的“尼旺宗”，为“日光城”，其寨堡已经没有了，原址上是一座白塔。独克宗古城依山势而建，路面起伏不平，那是一些岁月久远的旧石头就着自然地势铺成的，至2021年，石板路上还留着深深的马蹄印，那是当年的马帮给时间留下的信物了。对于穿越茶马古道的马帮来说，独克宗古城，是茶马古道上的重镇，也是马帮进藏后的第一站，这算是相当舒服的一段路。2001年，独克宗古城被批准为云南省历史文化名城。 Dukezong Ancient City was originally the best-preserved and largest Tibetan settlement in China. During the Yifeng and Tiaolu years of the Tang Dynasty (676-679 AD), Tubo established a fortress on the top of the Big Turtle Mountain here, named "Dukezong". The Tibetan pronunciation contains two meanings, one is "a castle built on stone" and the other is "Moonlight City". The later ancient city was built around the fortress on the top of the mountain. In response to this, "Niwangzong" was built on the top of a mountain beside the Naizi River, which is called "Sunlight City". Its fortress no longer exists, and there is a white tower on the original site. Dukezong Ancient City was built according to the mountain terrain, and the road surface is undulating. It was paved with some old stones that have been there for a long time according to the natural terrain. As of 2021, there are still deep horse hoof prints on the stone slabs, which are the tokens left by the horse caravans of that year. For the horse caravans crossing the Ancient Tea Horse Road, Dukezong Ancient City is an important town on the Ancient Tea Horse Road and the first stop for the horse caravans after entering Tibet. This is a very comfortable journey. In 2001, Dukezong Ancient City was approved as a historical and cultural city in Yunnan Province.
