Asteroid 2024 YR4 swept into the view of the ATLAS asteroid impact early warning system – with telescopes in Hawaii, Chile and South Africa – on December 25. As of January 27, the space rock has 1-in-83 odds of hitting Earth in 2032. The asteroid isn't gigantic. It's about 150 feet or 50 meters wide, about the same size as the asteroid that felled reindeer and flattened some 1,000 square miles (2,150 square km) of forest, in a remote part of Siberia in 1908.. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) keeps what it calls the Torino Impact Hazard Scale to rate the risk of asteroids making close encounters with Earth. Asteroid 2024 YR4 has a current value of 3 on the Torino scale, the 2nd-highest value ever recorded.
